Janis Joplin을 추모하는 노래라고 합니다. "내가 아는 모든 것은 잠시 그녀가 노랠 불렀고 그리곤 날아가 버렸다" 라는 가사가 인상적인... Hunter가 쓴 책인 "Box of Rain" 에서 노래 제목뒤에 "For Janis"라는 단어를 붙었다고 하죠.

 

 

 

음악이 흔들거리는 듯, 경쾌한 후렴구에 이를 때면 듣는 이는 Dead가 여태껏 선사했던 가장 아름다운 경지에 다다른다. 비록 당시 비평에 따르면 그러한 효과가 그리 또렷한 것은 아니었지만... "Bird Song"은 Dead의 팬들이 달콤하다고, 나는 졸리웁다고, 이야기 하는 Garcia-Hunter노래중의 하나이다. Alec Dubro는 1972년 Rolling Stone지에서 "그들의 라이브 곡처럼 길거나 적어도 그렇게 보인다." 라고 썼다. 그러나 초기 작품에서의 Garcia의 높고 종이장처럼 가는 목소리는 보다 깊고 비바람을 맞은 목소리 - 부분적으로는 수십년의 흡연때문에 - 로 대체되어 새로운 깊이를 갖는 것 같다.

 

Dead의 다른 곡들 처럼 곡의 변화는 수년간 Dead의 공연 목록에서 빠진 후에야 나타났다. 이곡은 1971년 과 1973년 사이에 60회 이상 공연된 후 밀려났다. 그러나 날카로운 마이너 키의 멜로디 그리고 따뜻하지만 섬세한 친근감이 밴드로 하여금 1980년대에 어쿠스틱 넘버로 다시 연주하게 하였다..............
