Aoxomoxoa (1969)는 Grateful Dead의 세번째 앨범인데, 외부 프로듀서 없이 Garcia/Hunter의 곡을 주로 녹음한 것으로 보면 첫번째 앨범으로 알려져있습니다. 그리고 16 트랙기술을 사용한 첫번째 앨범이기도 하고요. Aoxomoxoa (1969)의 곡들은 이후 Grateful Dead의 공연에서 자주 연주가 되진 않았습니다. Jerry Garcia는 후에 이렇게 이야기 하였습니다.
"A lot of the Aoxomoxoa songs are overwritten and cumbersome to perform. They're packed with lyrics or musical chnages that aren't worth it for what finally happens with the song. But at the time , I wasn't writing songs for the band to play - I was writing songs to be writing songs. Those were the first songs Hunter and I did together, and we didn't have the craft of songwriting down"
"Aoxomoxoa의 대부분의 곡들은 너무 기교를 부렸고 연주하기 쉽지 않다. 그 곡들은 가사와 리듬의 변화들로 채워져 있는데 그것들은 그 곡들의 모습에 꼭 필요한 것들은 아니다. 당시 나는 밴드의 연주를 염두에 두고 곡을 쓰진 않았다. 오히려 곡을 쓰기 위해서 썼다. 그곡들은 Hunter와 내가 작업한 첫 작품들이었고 우린 곡을 써내려가는 기술이 부족했다"
