Puff, The Magic Dragon 이 노래는 Moving (1963)에 실려 발표되었던 노래입니다. 이 곡은 1959년 Peter Yarrow의 친구이 었던 Leonard Lipton(당시 19세로 Cornell 대학의 학생이었다고 합니다)이 만든 시를 기반으로해서 Peter Yarrow가 가사를 덧 붙이고 멜로디를 붙여서 곡을 완성하였고, 1961년 PPM을 결성한 후 Moving(1963)을 내기 전에도 라이브에서 이곡을 불렀습니다. 음반이 출시되면서 이곡이 유명해지자 Peter Yarrow는 시를 만을었던 친구를 찾아서 저작권의 일부를 주었다고 합니다.

 

Puff는 PPM의 대표곡 답게 많은 앨범에 이곡이 실려있습니다. In Concert (1964)에 라이브 버전이 실려있고 Peter Paul and Mommy (1969) 라는 어린이들을 위한 앨범을 제작하면서 다시 Studio Recording을 하였습니다. 이 곡에는 어린이들이 참여해서 노래를 같이 불렀지요. 또 하나 많이 달라진 점은 전주 부분인데, 이 전주는 바로 양희은씨가 불렀던 Puff에서 들어볼수 있습니다.

 

이 외에도 Peter Paul and Mommy, Too (1993), Around The Campfire (1998), 25th Anniversary Concert (1986, Video), Holiday Concert (1988, Video) 등에서 라이브 버전을 들어볼 수 있습니다.

 

또 하나 이곡의 재미난(?) 에피소드는 이곡이 마약 그중에서도 마리화나에 관한 노래라는 설이 있다는 것이지요. 노래 가사에 나오는 Jackie Paper는 마리화나를 말때 쓰는 종이를 의미하고 Autumn Mist는 마리화나 연기를 의미하며, Land of Hanah Lee는 하와이에서 마리화나 재배로 유명한 곳인 Hanalei를 의미한다는 주장입니다. Peter Yarrow는 마리화나하고는 전혀 상관이 없다고 밝힌 바 있고 대부분의 사람들은 이곡이 마리화나와는 상관없는 어린이를 위한 노래라고 믿고 있습니다.
