오래된 영국의 Traditional Song입니다. 폴 사이먼이 1965년 영국에 머물 당시 영국의 Folk Singer 이자 Guitarist인 Martin Carthy로 부터 이곡을 배웠다고 합니다. 그가 멋진 편곡을 했고 그로부터 배웠던 기억을 통해서 이곡을 불렀답니다. 그런데 이 당시 Tradition Source란 것을 명백하게 밝히지 않고 Simon & Garfunkel의 작품으로만 기록되었던 것이 문제가 되어 Martin Carthy의 심기가 불편했다고 하네요. :-) 폴 사이먼이 60년대에 종종 연주했던 Angie란 기타 연주곡도 그로 부터 배웠다고 하지요.

 

이곡은 Simon & Garfunkel의 걸작 Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (1966)에 실려있습니다.  The Graduate OST가 발매가 되면서 Single로도 발매가 되었다고 합니다.

 

Canticle 부분은 Paul Simon의 1963년 작품인 The Side of a Hill을 다시 작업해서 이 노래에 사용했습니다. The Side of a Hill은 Paul Simon의 솔로 앨범인 Songbook에서 들어 볼수 있습니다.
